| Never before was the serenity of a
beach shore shattered by a sound other than the swish of the ocean... Never before did gentle waves that rocked us like babies look so fearsome... Never again will the sea be our silent friend or soothing companion... |

The Tsunami waves that were triggered by a massive earthquake under the sea, off the Sumatra coast, have inflicted wide-spread death and destruction, leaving thousands homeless, wounded and alone. And the irony of it all is, all over South East Asia, India and Sri Lanka, the worst hit are the fishermen and coastal community for whom the sea was their livelihood – a life-giver – and now, also a life-taker! As death-tolls begin to rise, nearing 24,000 on the Asian coasts, India has been taken completely unawares and Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andaman Islands have been badly affected. Many voluntary organisations and the government have begun relief operations to provide support and are mobilising resources. However, we believe that a coordinated effort on behalf of the NGO community will result in maximum help being given in a timely and organised manner rather than everyone doing their little bit in stray areas. In order to do this, a Tsunami-South India NGO Coordination Cell has been set up at Chennai, headed by Dr Jacob D Raj and the national contact point at Delhi is Ms Gurinder Kaur. Various voluntary organisations and groups are coming together to help in a united manner to make a difference more effectively. We urge you to mobilise resources and offer support as best you can. All contributions to the NGO Coordination Cell will be managed by PREPARE, and PREPARE will also be accountable for the same. Two Chartered Accountants (M Samuel Jeyakumar and V Narasimhamurthy) are appointed to be responsible for the NGO Coordination Cell fund management.
